Section 2: Methodologies of Corpus-Linguistic Grammar Research

 Deutsch

This section provides a forum for the discussion of methodological aspects of corpus-linguistic grammar research, mainly focusing on the following questions:

  • How can grammatical regularities be described by corpus-linguistic work or – in a corpus-driven approach – be systematically detected?
  • How can such regularities be captured conceptually?
  • How can linguistic theory formation be guided by empirical research, and how can the resulting theories be subjected to empirical falsification?
  • What are the discrepancies between a technically motivated occupation with language and the desiderata of linguistic theory formation and linguistic description, and what implications do these discrepancies have for linguistics?
  • In which way do very large corpora change our view on language and particularly on grammar?
  • What viable future directions of corpus-linguistic methodologies for grammar research can we already anticipate today?

We invite papers that discuss specific analytical methods, methodological explorations (also at an early stage), methods for corpus-based grammatical description, approaches to the corpus-driven modelling of grammatical structures, and in particular fundamental reflections at the level of linguistic theory formation and philosophy of science.
